After over twenty years’ experience in the financial sector, Mrs. Sandy Chin spent the last year turning her attention to a new project: organizing and leading a new summer reading program at west side New York City public elementary school, PS11. Also known as the William T. Harris School, PS11 hosts a wide range of students including those from two low income housing projects. For such students lacking the availability of trips to the library and affordability of book ownership, summer’s three-month break from school can often mean a regression of their reading capabilities by the time the next school year rolls around. Mrs. Chin recruited other volunteers to organize a book drive called “Books, Boxes & Bodies” where people could donate books to be given to the kindergarten students for free. The response was overwhelming, and the school ended up with enough books for every single student; over 3,000 total! The next step was to divide the books by grade/reading level so the students would receive books appropriate for the age and skill. The drive was more of a success than anyone could have imagined, and the students were thrilled to have the opportunity to choose their own books to take home. For Sandy, her own love of books contributes to her dedication to providing them for the students. She hopes her children and the other students at PS11 will keep reading regardless of the season, now that they have more access to books.
