Ara Chackerian’s has shown his concern for the environment in the blogs he posts. For instance, he has explained the problem that came with Japan’s move on the country’s forestry plans. Japan, according to Ara Chackerian, cleared a large part of their forests that were decades old to make way for trees that grew faster. This move was meant to cater for the growing demand for construction materials in the 50s. The plan did not work as planned. The repercussions of the Buna Massacre, as it was labeled, hit both the people and the wildlife as well. The result of an estimated 17 million trees being cut down was planting foreign forests.

Years later, Ara Chackerian says that Japan’s forestry industry had reduced by more than half to $450 billion as of 2014. The people who worked in the industry were hit as well and most of them opted for other sources of income. The number reduced by two thirds from the original 146,000 workers. This small number of workers has resulted in an irregular growth of the forests. The result of this, according to Ara Chackerian, is floods and landslides in the country.
